3 Fun Ways to End the Year on a Positive Note

There is a lot of ways and discussion on how to begin the school year but ending the year well is just as important. In fact, studies even show that people remember the beginning and end of things more than everything else in between.

Here are 3 fun and easy ways to end this school year on a positive note:

  1. Bring Math Outside

  2. Student Advice for Next School Year

  3. Student & Teacher Reflections

  1. Bring Math Outside

Pick up some sidewalk chalk and take your students, with math notes and textbooks in their hands, outside. Put students in small groups and have them brainstorm all the math topics they learned this year.

Then have them circle or star the top 5 things they learned in math class this year. Encourage discussion as to why they thought the topics they picked were most important. Best of all everyone will see all they learned this year!

  2. Student Advice for Next School Year

Have your students list five pieces of advice for next year’s group of math students. What are helpful tips they can share with next year’s class to help them survive the year! This is perfect for pairs of students or small groups. After they list the advice, they can even turn it into a letter that you can leave on student’s desk at the beginning of the next school year.

  3. Student & Teacher Reflection

Reflecting on struggles and wins over the past year is important for both students and teachers. Simple have students finish the following sentences on an index card or piece of paper:

    • One struggle I had this year was…

    • One success I am happy about was…

    • My least favorite thing about math class was…

    • My favorite things about this year’s math class was…

Then you do the same thing on an index card or paper. Write notes about the past school year you want to remember or finish sentences such as:

  • Things that worked well this school year were…

  • Things that did not work well this school year were…

  • Topics that students struggled to learn were….

  • Ways I grew as a teacher this year include…

Finally, tape the index card or piece of paper inside your desk drawer or somewhere you will see it at the start of the next school year.
